Should I Gift Bitcoin to a Child?

How about you start saving in bitcoin and stacking sats for your children? They will grow to thank you for it.

While I was scrolling through Twitter over the weekend, I came across a tweet of someone who gifted bitcoin to her best friend’s baby. That’s the most thoughtful gift ever.

Opendime is “a small USB stick that allows you to spend Bitcoin like a dollar bill”. Just load it with bitcoin and you can pass it around multiple times. And you can use a USB to check the balance.

Pretty cool, right?

I don’t know if you believe in coincidences but that tweet reminded me of Bella’s Children’s Day email. She wrote about how she heard about a guy on a Twitter Space who was saving bitcoin for 4 of his unborn children.

I know Children's Day was a couple of weeks ago but what if bitcoin is the best gift you can give a child?

Maybe you think I’m crazy. “How on earth would a child appreciate the value of bitcoin?” “What would a child do with it?”

Let’s say you bought $10 worth of bitcoin May 27, 2013 for a child on Children’s Day when the price of one bitcoin was above $100. By this year’s Children’s Day, the value of that bitcoin would have gone up by approximately 28900%. According to Bitnob’s DCA calculator, if you decided to dollar cost average $10 in bitcoin every month for that same child from May 27, 2013 to the same date in 2022 that child would have been the proud owner of almost 2 bitcoin valued at $46,483.33. That’s 1.6342 bitcoin as of the time of writing this.

In this part of the world, gifting a child some bitcoin sounds weird. But with figures like the ones I shared above, it’s enough to get someone thinking.

Maybe you don’t have access to something tangible like an Opendime that you can give to your bestie at her baby shower, or your relative’s child’s baptism. What if opening a bitcoin wallet for the child or setting up a bitcoin savings plan on Bitnob on behalf of the child could be the best thing you could ever do for that child’s future.

The trend of buying baby clothes or toys could be replaced with something that a child will never be able to outgrow for the rest of their life.

Maybe gifting a child bitcoin isn’t such a bad idea after all.

Huge shoutout to @Crypto_Mags whose tweet inspired this blog post.
